7 Health Benefits of Turmeric

This famous spice has been My survival as I am using it as anti-inflammatory agent, Turmeric is closely related to the ginger plant, and only the roots are used as they contain most of the flavor and nutrients. Turmeric is used in many cultures as alternative medicine and its use is well documented. I like to use turmeric in tasty health tonics, smoothies and adding it to my food for the color, flavor and these 7 health benefits

1 – Curcumin Is A Natural Anti-Inflammatory

3% of the turmeric root is made up of a curcumin, which is well known as an anti-inflammatory and powerful antioxidant. It’s what gives turmeric that bright color and is what scientists believe to be the most potent part of the plant.

2 – Lowers Risk of Heart Disease

Another benefit of curcumin, is that it helps improve the lining of the blood vessels in the body. Heart Disease is linked to excess build-up of the artery walls, which increases the risk of a blockage or blood clot. Curcumin, being a powerful natural anti-inflammatory, works to reduce inflammation and oxidation in the body, thus helping to reduce the risk of heart attack.

3 – Cancer Prevention

Although turmeric hasn’t been directly linked to the prevention of cancer, various properties of curcumin have. Studies have shown it has the ability to reduce the spread of cancer (metastasis) and new blood vessels in tumors as well as elimination of cancer cells. Curcumin may never single-handedly be the solution for cancer prevention, but it definitely wouldn’t hurt.

4 – Prevent & Treat Alzheimer’s Disease

Population studies have shown that elders in India have the lowest rates of Alzheimer’s Disease in the world. Although this turmeric hasn’t proven to be the reason behind this, many speculate it’s because they consume turmeric in their cuisine on a daily basis. However, because of the strong anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effect curcumin has on the body there’s a good chance that it can prevent this common neurodegenerative disease

5 – Reduce Arthritis & Joint Pain

Arthritis is mostly caused by inflammation in the joints, and that’s what curcumin is best at: reducing inflammation. Although there’s no need to speculate its effectiveness at reducing joint pain as a recent study from the Nirmala Medical Center showed several patients with rheumatoid arthritis who used a curcumin supplement had more relief than their anti-inflammatory drugs

6 – Anti-Depression Remedy

There is now research that suggests curcumin can increase serotonin and dopamine levels in the brain which are the common brain neurotransmitters related to depression. It is a potent natural remedy for depression and anxiety. In a small 6 week study with 60 patients led by the Department of Pharmacology at the GM College in India, curcumin was found to be as effective as Prozac – having a positive effect on the hippocampus, which is the area of the brain responsible for memory and learning as well

7 – Upset Stomach

Turmeric is excellent at keeping stomach acid under control, which is beneficial for those who are used to frequent heartburn or indigestion. Although, almost all of us can benefit from more subtle upset stomachs, which is why I like to drink a glass of water with fresh turmeric grated in (using a zester) alongside some lemon essential oil or a cucumber. I also enjoy it in my daily green juices.

These 7 benefits are really just touching the surface of how incredible this root is. Next time you’re in the produce section of your health food store, pick up a piece of this root and enjoy for yourself.
